David Frederick Chapman University will present new research at the Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association 108 are researching about who should pay on a date during courtship. Survey data from more than 17,000 participants, a quarter of them also provide written comments to explain their beliefs and actions regarding pay when dating.
It is known that most of the marriage (8 of 10) based on the current load sharing breadwinner, so the question is whether that role is divided before the wedding and, if so, how early in the dating process.
Consistent with conventional norms, most men (84 percent) and women (58 percent) reported that men pay some of the costs, even after a long courtship. More than half (57 percent) of women admitted they offer to help pay for, but a lot of women (39 percent) said they hope people will reject their offer to pay, and 44 percent of women disturbed when men expect women to help pay.
Nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of men believe that women should contribute to the cost of dating, and many feel strongly about it: Nearly half of men (44 percent) said they would stop dating a woman who never pay. Most men (76 percent) feel guilty when I have to accept money from a woman. In terms of behavior, 4 of the 10 men and women agree that the cost of a date that is at least partially divided in the first month, and roughly three-quarters (74 percent male, 83 percent female) reported sharing costs up to six.
Young men and women aged 20's are the most likely to support the egalitarian practice, this is the same cultural phenomenon seen regardless of age, income, or education. Although there is evidence of resistance to change, the data show that the habit of going out on pay-pay also changed along with the transformation of the material and social power of women and men.
